Sound and Vision: The YouTube Phenomenon

Ever Since YouTube was introduced in 2005 it has become the most worldwide video sharing website. Before the launch of YouTube in 2005, there were few easy methods available for ordinary computer users who wanted to post videos online. The popularity of YouTube stems from several aspects of the website. The simple fact of its easy access to millions of videos on pretty much any topic you can think of is key to its success. There is no doubt that YouTube has made a social impact. Several videos have gone viral on YouTube not to mention a personal favorite that I'm sure most people have seen "Charlie Bit My Finger". YouTube has also aided in the discovery of new artists as well as their popularity such as Justin Bieber.

Why do you think so many people are drawn to YouTube? How much of a part do you think YouTube has played in the discovery of new artists? If you use YouTube, why are you drawn to the website?

  1. People are drawn to Youtube because it is available, and free. Youtube usually has the most recent music videos and songs, and they also have a large archive of old songs, episodes, and etc. to look into. For new artists Youtube is a GREAT place to get noticed, does it get them a million dollar contract with a big company no...but it will get you fans and possibly some gigs. Personally I have a Youtube app on my phone and i use it frequently. I believe why I'm so attracted to Youtube is because I grew up around it. It really was the only video website that I knew of since grade school.

  2. I think so many people are drawn to Youtube because you can find practically anything there. Clips from something major that happened that people are talking about, funny videos, music videos, tv episodes, new artists, how to do anything videos, etc. It is free which is huge. It's just the site that everyone knows to go to for any video. I also think Youtube is starting to play a major role in discovering new artists.

  3. I think Youtube is very popular due to the fact it is free. It also provides such an array of videos that it is exciting to see what you can actually find by just typing in a word. People do some crazy stuff and youtube allows the world to see all of it.
It also is a great place for being discovered. Many people don't have the resources or "connections" to excel in a career of music or acting, but Youtube gives people a chance. It may not work for everyone but at least it provides the opportunity for striving artists to be noticed.
This is not only an outlet for people trying to be discovered for positive reasons, but we also see a lot of nonsense being uploaded as well. Unfortunately, I don't see a filter process that will change that anytime soon.

  4. I think people are so drawn to Youtube because it is easy to access free videos. It can be entertaining and informative. I find it easier to find and watch videos on Youtube compared to other websites that post videos. Youtube has had a huge contribution to making people famous. Not only was Justin Bieber found on Youtube but so was Esmee Denters by Justin Timberlake. She hasn't shot to stardom as fast as Bieber but she has still had success. I enjoy Youtube because I can watch videos my friends have posted, put my own videos up there and watch other videos such as music videos for free.

  5. I'm not a huge user of Youtube. Of course I love the site to death, but I enjoy learning through writing (Twitter) rather then video. Youtube is free, which people crave and is an instant plus. Youtube always provides an image to go with the news; scenes of war or protest or uprising. As for discovering new artists....if you have the money, it is easy to be "discovered" (Hello, Rebecca Black). While artists on Youtube may get some popularity and a fanbase, an exploding cult favorite such as Beiber seems pretty rare.

I go on Youtube mainly for music videos and songs. I don't have to pay for it like on iTunes and can listen as many times as I want.

  6. Youtube is free. No one wants to pay for anything on the internet. I like to go to youtube to listen to songs that I don't want to pay for. Youtube is another creative outlet. It is a way to broadcast yourself, whether you are showing off a talent or simply expressing an opinion. Anyone can make a Youtube video. Operating a camera isn't difficult and I think thats why it is popular. I would not say many artists are actually discovered on youtube. I would rather say they get their fifteen minutes of fame. It is a good way to get noticed. However, people know this. Not everything on youtube is real people. An example would be lonelygirl15.

  7. The thing about Youtube is that it basically serves as a Google-like search engine for any video you could possibly think of. Now that Myspace has gone defunct, I mostly use Youtube to search for videos of various obscure bands. Not only is Youtube a great place to find videos, but they also feature 1 frame "videos" that contain 1 picture with a song playing in the background. Youtube has become a 1 stop destination for all kinds of media including previews for video games, guides on how to tie a necktie, analysis and critique of popular phenomena and clips of old TV shows long since swept off the air and mostly forgotten about. One way I use Youtube, which is very odd, is for recording sound clips with WavePad and pasting them into my musical compositions. It is highly possible that this is downright copyright infringement, but I haven't gotten caught yet! This just goes to demonstrate the versatility of Youtube. It is not just a site for posting videos, it is a dynamic, encyclopedic catalog of multiple forms of visual and audio media.

  8. People are drawn to YouTube for its openended creativity. Everyone is an artist. It gives many people the chance to express themselves in a way that has never happened before. It gives hope to the unknown which spurs even more creativity. The quality of the videos is often not on par with the corporate world, but that is part of the beauty. It is less controlled. Nonetheless, it is tough to get views. My Dad has three music videos on YouTube and in 1 year, he has had a total of 3500 views. But he is happy with this because he still thinks he can upload a hit. I think Justin Bieber is a rarity. The vast majority of uploaders are probably like my Dad, happy just to have the chance to be seen by people all over the world. However, there are jobs to be had, such as commercial work. A very popular YouTube act scored a TV Christmas commercial for a car company. They are a husband and wife team that I don't remember the name of, but I am sure they made a good deal of money.

  9. YouTube has been such a sensation for the past six, almost seven years because it allows ordinary individuals to connect with others and share with them a part of their life. People have the ability to easily upload videos of themselves, friends and family and have the potential to share with the world a very popular video. Even if those individuals don't have the intention to become famous, they can easily share videos with family members and friends. The internet is a tool used to connect people near and far, so YouTube will definitely make an impact in discovering new artists. I believe that YouTube has not yet made an impact in the music industry, but certainly will. I do not personally use YouTube to upload pictures, but I will go on it once in awhile if I find a link to a funny or interesting video.

  10. Youtube has turned into this huge phenomenon in which sharing viral video's about almost anything you can think of has become very accessible for people. You can find a youtube video on pretty much anything ranging from make-up tips and how to tie a tie, to watching music videos, to watching someone have a fall. People also have a natural attraction to having a laugh at another's expense. These things to me are part of what has made youtube so successful. Youtube has also played a major role in the discovery of new artists because of its popularity, and users it has created a medium for new artists to be heard by the masses. Once someone hears the new track they can forward the link to all their friends and bang. You have an instant following of people who like your music. Eventually the record labels will hear the buzz and hopefully want to sign a deal. This has happened in the case of several artists like "soulja boy," Justin Beiber. I personally use youtube often. I like the accessibility factor and how easy it is to find whatever I am looking for that day. The negative part of the youtube experience to me is finding it hard to get to the solid links through the vast world of parody's, and fake videos there are.

  11. YouTube is incredibly convenient for the world to have at their hands. We can all see videos of anything, anywhere, whenever we would like to. We even have phones that automatically come with YouTube applied to them. It's just one of those phenomenons that people can't help but use because its so fun and intriguing.

When it comes to new artists, they can all show their talents and their full abilities through mini clips. Many people have been discovered or atleast have become well known through what they demonstrate on YouTube.

Seriously though, who can live without YouTube. Any new video that comes out, or even if you want to learn the lyrics to a dog while playing it in the background all you have to is go to YouTube and type in what your looking for. It's just very easy and fast to use when needed.

  12. YouTube has become a huge phenomenon in which people can access videos without needing to pay a fee or sign up for anything. These days, no one wants to pay for anything. Especially on the internet. I think people are drawn to YouTube simply because of its accessibility. It provides a place for people to access free videos and share their own as well. I believe that YouTube has played a large part in the discovery of many artists. There have been many people who post a video on YouTube only to be discovered soon after and end up with a record deal. YouTube also helps to promote current artists by featuring their music videos and performances. YouTube draws people in because of its ease, speed, accessibility, and user-friendly feel. If you are looking for something on the internet, there a good possibility that you can find it on YouTube.

  13. I think people are drawn to Youtube because one can find a video on almost anything for free. It is also a way to get your work out, whether it's a slide show of pieces of art or a video that you wrote/directed or maybe a music video of a song you wrote. Because it's free to watch, more people will be likely to see the video as opposed to a site where you have to pay to watch. I think Youtube has played a big part in discovering new artist, especially now that they have a 'spotlight' side. I would have never known about Arnel Pineda (current lead singer of Journey) or Charice Pempengco had it not been for Youtube. Personally, I am drawn to the site because I can watch clips from my favorite tv shows or special features of a movie with out buying the special edition dvd. I also plan on posting my own videos for everyone to watch.
