YouTube

Everyone has heard of YouTube before. It is a video sharing site where a person can upload and share videos. Formerly owned by Three Paypal employees ,YouTube is now owned by Google. Most people have gone on YouTube and watched videos. These videos are usually sent by a friend or co-worker saying “Hey, watch this it is funny or interesting”. Then there are also people who watch YouTube videos constantly and are actively using it every single day. YouTube is used in positive ways though, Teachers can easily access videos to show to their classes and people can have video blogs. Some may even have accounts on YouTube so they can post their own videos. When reading the (Mis)Conceptions of YouTube reading it brought up a few things that I found interesting.Lange points out that this is a video sharing site but more happens on YouTube then video sharing. Do you think YouTube has become more than a video sharing site? How do you feel about people being able to take a video you posted and link it anywhere on internet? That anyone can comment on your video and say anything like? Do you think it occurs to people that YouTube is transforming into another social networking site, with being able to have your own profile and being able to comment and send messages to people? Do you believe YouTube has proposed another platform for cyber bulling? What does YouTube and its content really mean to you, is it just another website or is it more than a video site?

  1. I think you make a great point about it being able to be used for positive ways other than entertainment, such as teachers using it in class to show material. I think YouTube is above all else a video sharing site, even though there may be other aspects to it. Although there are profiles where you can add information, it's still usually relative to the videos you're posting. I notice a lot with viral videos though, people add lots of information about who they are once a video gets popular because they're hoping to be noticed more and more and become more popular.
I think that if you post something out there on YouTube, you should be okay with the fact that it will be shared by others and posted in different places. As far as commenting, you can control whether or not comments are able to be posted, and monitor them if you don't like what's being said. It's all about what you're comfortable with, though I definitely do think if you're posting videos on there, you're opening that content up to the world.
As far as cyber bullying, I think it's very possible that YouTube can be another channel for this. However, I'd say Facebook would be a worse place just because of the nature of the site. Of course, I'm sure people will find ways to go about it on YouTube as well. If people want to cyber bully, they'll figure out all the different ways to do it. Of course that's not the intention of the site, but there are always going to be people who abuse it.
YouTube to me is in a way "just another site", but it can be both a valuable resource and a form of entertainment. I like to go on there and watch funny videos. I'll also go on there to look for a version of a monologue I'm going to have to perform for an English class. Since YouTube has launched, it's turned into another huge source. It's like the Google of videos. There are many possibilities of what you can do with YouTube. Although it may be "just a video site", it's all about what the user decides to use it for.

  2. I think that youtube is a very interesting site that can be used for a lot more than posting stupid, albeit momentarily amusing, videos. Last semester I took a journalism class and my professor had a youtube channel where she would post investigative videos about events happening in Albany. In this case youtube was a good way for her to share information on minor stories that traditional media was not covering. I think that more people will begin to utilize youtube for reasons similar to this. It is an easily accessible platform for getting a message out. For this reason youtube could be a very positive site. That is, if you can stop watching videos explaining the proper way to eat vegetables.

  3. I think that YouTube can be utilized as a platform to inform others about issues, and is not limited to a mere video sharing site. Although some of those videos are quite entertaining. I took a journalism class last semester and my professor had her own channel on YouTube. She would go around Albany and take videos on a flip camera and post them to her channel. The stories she covered where small and not covered by traditional media, but they were important to her so she used her channel to to bring them to the attention of the public. That is she tried, her channel did not get many hits. Despite this, I think that people can use YouTube for more important reasons than sharing silly videos of themselves. It is an easily accessible platform that allows people to bring what they feel passionate about to a wider audience. For this reason I think that YouTube could be utilized as a positive social force.

  4. I think Youtube has become a phenomena of its own. It's just as popular, if not more popular, than Google and usually is the founder of many viral videos that make it to tv and create sentations.

My journalism teacher in high school frequently used Youtube to show clips of the political campgain that was going on at the time and various other newsworthy images.

Youtube has also been the backbone of many up and coming musicians. I know of a few artists who have been discovered through Youtube and have recieved recording contracts because of their talent.

Overall, I think Youtube has good intentions, and the popularity it has taken on can only make for a better future for the company.

  5. I think Youtube is a great website. It has videos pertaining to pretty much everything whether I want to something entertainment related, to howto's, to news & politics. Right when you go to Youtube it shows what videos other viewers are watching and features other videos they think you might enjoy. Youtube has become a huge hit. I know that "My New Haircut" was a huge hit in my high school and you couldn't walk down the hallways without hearing "not now chief i'm in the zone" or "Jager bombs." I think it's a good idea that you can take a link and put it on a social networking site. It shows that this video is something you enjoy and you think it's something someone else will enjoy too. I don't see Youtube as a place for cyber bullying. Youtube videos are regulated so if someone found a video or channel truly offensive then they can flag it and it will be removed if Youtube really thinks its offensive too.
Overall, I think Youtube is a good website. It offers a lot of information to it's viewers and I think it is only going to get bigger.

  6. Youtube is one of the most popular websites I know of. I use it to watch music videos, listen to music, watch TV shows occasionally, and watch other videos that are shared. I think it has become so popular because it's a website that everyone can use and enjoy. Some videos are not appropriate for everyone but Youtube can be used in a positive light. I definitely think a lot of good has come out of it because as we've seen some younger kids use Youtube to post videos and then they can become very popular and even make it to TV. For example, there's a boy who makes videos and he goes by the name of Fred Figglehorn on Youtube. He made it to a teen show called iCarly.
I think it's interesting how people can link videos others have made to different websites and such to share things they like. I think Youtube could turn into another social network site if profiles become more defined or if people can have profiles without posting any videos, and just being able to comment. As for Youtube being another form of cyber bullying, I think this can happen with any site. It depends on the maturity level of the people using the site. If people leave positive comments and advice on the videos than the site can turn out to be more influential but if people act immaturely than the site will go down the drain. I think that Youtube has a lot of helpful and valuable information but it also has videos and such that are considered garbage. I really enjoy using Youtube to watch new music videos, funny videos, and also informative videos about current events.

  7. I feel as though Youtube has become more than simply a video sharing site, I think that if people are constantly posting videos of themselves and attracting viewers than they are more likely to become ‘cyber-stalked’. I don’t like the fact that anyone, anywhere can take a video of whomever, or whatever and post it on Youtube. I think Youtube offers its non-subscribers too many options such as comments and posting videos, etc. However, not to say that it would be much better if the person had an account with Youtube, but it would just give more authority to the person posting the comments and videos. I would agree, that it’s just a matter of time before Youtube is transformed into a social networking site similar to that of Facebook, Myspace, etc. because after all, we are able to do similar things on Youtube, as we would on any other social networking site. I think that Youtube, could potentially become another aspect of cyber-bullying especially if someone truly hated another person, all they would need to do is get their camera-phones out and start video-taping, upload, and all the hard work is done now, all they have to do is sit back and watch the video spread like ‘wild fire’.

  8. YouTube; the name of the website says it all. Essentially, when visiting the site, we are all just logging on and "tubing". Any time you think of a video to watch, need to learn how to do something visually or are just plain bored, YouTube is the site to visit. I definitely think it is the most popular of all the video sites, in fact I cannot think of another site that is strictly used as a video-network. The fact that Google, bought out the company, makes the site even more accessible.

When you first visit YouTube, it doesn't hit you that millions of people from all over the world are able to post almost anything they want on the site. It is even more crazy to think of how famous people can get from a funny video. For example, the David After the dentist video, now has over 53 million views! That is incredible. Now the entire family has their own website and David even has his own T-shirt.

Besides the whole Viral-Video craze, YouTube has been the gateway to some talented people's careers. For instance, Pricilla Renea, pop hit star, started her career posting videos of her singing and now is on the radio.

As for bullying, I agree with dereck, this is bound to happen on any website. So if you are going to post a video on YouTube for millions to see prepare to be picked on or in Pricilla's case, prepare for fame.

  9. YouTube is a site for sharing videos. Some may be more entertaining than others, some may have some history on them, others may just be music videos. I do think that YouTube has become more than just a video sharing site. I believe it is just another site where people can bully others. If you post a video on YouTube, chances are anyone can see it unless you have it blocked from public viewing. If you for example, post a video of you singing, but it isn't that good, someone might see it and pass it along to other people to say 'hey look at that person! they just made a fool of themselves on YouTube.' However, on YouTube it is a little more private because no one knows who you are in the videos, besides you and your friends. Just because no one knows you, doesn't mean that they won't try to cyber-bully you. I know that anyone can post a video, but I don't think it's always fair for people to post rude comments on people's videos, especially people they don't know. I know, as I'm sure most people know, that it's not nice to be bullied; whether or not you know the person. So many people will post anything on YouTube, I really think people should be more careful. YouTube should just be for fun in my opinion; a place where people can watch videos, and keep their rude comments to themselves. I do agree with Derek on what he said about cyber-bullying. No matter how you try to stop it, people will find a way to cyber bully others.

  10. YouTube is definitely a multifaceted site that offers different people different things. I've used YouTube as entertainment, but I've definitely used videos from it for class presentations as well. It's all what you choose to use and take from the site. People enjoy watching silly videos and others enjoying creating them. i think it can be a positive tool for a classroom as well as a fun way to spend a few minutes. People put all sorts of things on YouTube, some are boring, some are informative, some funny and everywhere in between.

The idea of bullying through YouTube is a little problematic for me. Every new venue for communication invented will bring some negative comments and a crowd of people using it in a malicious way. That's how people work. I don't think YouTube offers much in the way of new bullies, just a different way to bully. People were bullied long before there were computers and they will continue to exist. I also think that if you choose to post a video online, you are opening yourself up to the possibility of negative comments, if you don't want to hear it, then don't post it. It's as simple as that. People need to learn how to take criticism, even if it's malicious. It's not nice to bully, but when you post anything publicly online, you need to understand that the possibility of mean and unpleasant things might be commented on it.

  11. Youtube has definitely become more than just a video sharing site. To begin with, there is already the option of adding somebody as a friend. This is typical in most social networking sites, such as facebook and myspace. Also, everyone with a youtube account has their own unique profile page. On this page, they can talk a little about who they are, and about why they want to use youtube to post videos. This is already pretty standard for social networking.
Another couple of examples of how youtube may be more than video sharing, is the ability to respond to people's videos. You may post a video response to somebody else's video. I've often seen people who post video blogs about their life, and they might add in a question that people can video respond back to. This makes it almost like a conversation between two users, and that seems pretty social network-y to me!
Finally, there is the ability to comment on people's profiles, as well as send them messages. These are both really standard on social networking sites. On Facebook, there are usually a lot more pictures, as well as the option of videos, but it's not as common. However, Youtube doesn't have nearly as many pictures. It's basically the same things as facebook, without status updates on a newsfeed, and replacing pictures with videos.

  12. I personally feel that YouTube is a great way to show funny videos, and I use Youtube very often. Whether its to look at funny videos, trailers for movies and almost everything. I like youtube, but now there is a lot of competition. Other sites have come out that are used for the same reasons, such as Hulu. It is a very big competition with YouTube, but I feel that YouTube is much easier to use. I also think that there are many more videos on YouTube than the other competition sites.

I think that people being able to post a video of you on YouTube is rediculous, but then again you don't really have much privacy on the internet so that your own fault. If you are putting a video on the computer, then you know it is NOT going ot be private and you're going to probably see it on something other than you facebook page. I think being able to post comments on others videos is expected. I would personally want the feed back and want people to comment and tell me what they think about what I had posted. It is just like using facebook and posting comments/statuses.

YouTube is just like a facebook and definitely could become just as big as facebook. Cyberbullying definitely occurs, on people who are either jealous of what is being posted, they don't like it or they just want to be jerks. People are very inconsiderate, but you have realize that when you post something on the internet, it is no longer private.

  13. I think YouTube has become more than a video sharing site. Many people can create accounts which I have actually had one for about a year now. On your account, people have the option of creating a profile and posting their own videos. It allows you to add friends, very similar to Facebook. The option of sending messages is available. Also, people can learn about current issues going on in the world. While it may be a video, it can be more like a news site, as well.

I think that if people are going to post videos then they should expect them to show up on other sites. Like others have said once a video is posted it is no longer private. And they should expect comments, as well. I think in a way it does propose a platform to cyber bullying. Often when I am watching videos I notice that many people bash the artist or others who make comments on the artist. I think this should be expected, as well, because everyone has their own views or opinions and are going to voice them. People have that right to disagree or agree with whatever the video may be about.

YouTube to me has become more than a video site. I am constantly favoriting videos from favorite artists of mine or just funny videos. This is a reflection of myself. I also have my account linked to Facebook so that when I favorite a video, it comes up on my wall. I think people may be picking up on the fact that YouTube is becoming more like a social networking site but it is definitely not as well known as Facebook or Twitter.

  14. I do not think it has become more than a video sharing site. Yes it is very popular an people everywhere are posting videos and watching videos, but it is still just a site where people share videos. I think that people should not get upset if their video is linked elsewhere. They know that this is a risk they are taking when they upload their video to Youtube. Same with the comments, by posting the video they should understand that they are taking the risk to getting negative comments and the like. No I do not think that Youtube is a place that encourages cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can happen anywhere on the internet. If one doesn't want to be cyber bullied then do not put up a video on Youtube. Youtube is honestly just another website that has funny videos sometimes, nothing more.
