Podcasts :)

People have predicted the death of radio for a very long time. When TV came around, everyone thought that radio would slowly die away. Now, with the internet, TV is slowly decreasing in popularity, but radio is still around in many different forms. One of these is through Podcasts. Do you listen to, or are subscribed to any podcasts? Do you think that the popularity of podcasts is going to decrease because music is so easily available through iTunes and other websites. What might be the reason why radio-type programs such as a podcasts are still as popular as they are today?

  1. I feel as though podcasts aren’t as popular as they could be because not many people know the significance behind them. After listening and subscribing to a few podcasts myself, I know that I enjoy listening to them when I’m busy doing other tasks. I find that the podcasts I subscribe to usually pertain to Track & Field, Sports, Athletics, etc. however, I don’t see myself constantly listening to podcasts. But instead, I find myself preferring to listen to the radio or simply just music. At times I feel as though podcasts come in handy and are a valid broadcast of information that pertains to the topic that I want to hear about but other times I find myself loosing interest because some of them are so cut dry. I feel as though more people would prefer to listen to the radio then subscribe to a podcast (at least from my perspective) because not many people of my age listen to talk radio in which case is very similar to a podcast.

  2. I don't listen to podcasts. I don't think Podcasts are as popular as they could be. I really don't know much about podcasts or where to listen to them. I'd much rather just listen to the radio or just music. I think podcasts are good for people who want to hear about particular topics. When I listen to the radio i just want to listen to music or occasionally a morning talk show.

  3. Personally, I don't listen or subscribe to any podcasts. I know what they are, but don't know a lot about them and had never really looked into them. I do listen to the radio. I love to just listen to my own music that I have on my iPod, but I also sometimes like variety and to listen to morning shows, so I'll listen to the radio in the car a lot. I don't really know if the popularity of podcasts will decrease, but I don't think it will increase much from here. I'm sure it has it's group of followers just like anything, and they will be loyal and stick with listening to podcasts. However, I don't see it gaining a ton of new listeners. I think it's a neat idea, but just not something that I feel I will utilize.

  4. I don't think radio will ever fully die off, it's to versatile and too many people still listen to it in the car or during other activities that they need to be hands free. Yes, ipod and similar notions have decreased the popularity of radio, but it's still kicking. I don't think podcasts will die out anytime soon, since most people i know that listen to podcasts don't actually use them for music. At the very least, I'm confident sports podcasts will live on for a while.

I don't personally subscribe or listen to any podcasts, I still like good old fashioned radio (or maybe some sirius satellite) So I personally have much of a need for it. Between that and my downloaded music, I have little need for podcasts :-)

  5. I do not subscribe or listen to any podcasts, but that is not really a reflection on the media itself. I think that podcasts are a very convenient and user driven way to listen to the radio. Podcasts come in a wide variety of topics, so the person downloading them to an iPod or MP3 player can choose exactly what they want to listen to, whether it is a general talk show or something very specific. I think this type of range is what makes podcasts so popular. I think this range of programming will keep people listening to podcasts, and not abandoning them for other music downloading sites, especially since many podcasts are free.

  6. I think that the radio will never be obsolete. There is always a time for it. Even with Ipods sometimes its nice to hear what is on the radio. I think Ipods have made it a little harder on radios but will not completely wipe them out.
Podcasts are another story. I think Podcasts are not really like the radio. I think podcasts are like spoken blogs.A blog can be anything someone wants to say at that moment. That is what these podcasts are except a podcast is not the written word. I think having a word written down is always a stronger bond and can hold up better if ever being judged on. I feel like once something is written down its final.
When blogs were originating did that eliminate diaries and journals? No. I think that if a media is important to people it will never be wiped out. Podcasts have just made it easier for people to receive the information. Makes it more accessible.

I personally tried to listen to some of the podcasts on Itunes. I was not really interested in any of them. I went through five pages of podcast's and none seemed interesting. They all seem to be under either religion, video games, and sex help. I was not really looking to listen to any of these. So I subscribed to the ICarly one because that was the only thing I knew about that was on there that was not under the three categories.I was not interested I shut it off after about a minute.

  7. I do listen to a few podcasts. One of the podcasts that I have on my itunes is a podcast by one of my favorite authors, Jodi Picoult. In this podcast, she tells the listeners about her book, Nineteen Minutes. This is interesting for me to listen to cause I haven't read the book yet, but it makes me want to read it. I also have Oprah (yeah I know, weird) on my ipod. I didn't know what a podcast was so I just downloaded that because it sounded interesting. I am not entirely sure if the popularity of podcasts will go down because music is so available to people. I think it could happen because not everyone wants to listen to people talk for an hour on something, especially because we can't see them. It can get boring. I think the only reason some are still popular is because there are a select group of individuals who do like to listen to people talk about a particular subject whether it be about the news, sports, the olympics, whatever, some people like to listen to other peoples opinions on such things. I do think that music will always be more powerful than podcasts just because more people like to listen to music than listen to people they can't see blab on for an hour about something.

  8. I wasn't exactly sue what a podcast was when we began talking about them, so I never listened to one before. After I learned what a podcast was I listen to a few and learned some are more interesting than others. I learned that iTunes now has video along with audio podcasts. Out of the podcasts I listened to, I enjoyed some of the comedic ones. If more people knew of podcasts I think they would become more popular. It might just be the newer generation that is not as well aware of them but I would enjoy listening to podcasts when going on a trip or vacation. I think the popularity of podcasts could increase with iTunes if they are advertised more. I never payed much attention to the tab that says podcasts but now I will look more often at them when I check out new music and videos.

  9. I personally don't listen to or subscribe to any podcasts. The different ones that we made in class were really funny, but I don't think actual people would subscribe to the ones we made, unless they really had nothing better to do with their money etc. I definitely think podcasts are going to decrease, but not go away. Even though music is so easy to download from itunes, they also support podcasts and people could easily download them right from itunes as well. The reason they could be popular still today is the fact that people are still interested in them. Maybe not a group such as our age, but the older generations who are starting to really understand our world of technology might keep have been keeping the podcast population alive. And going back to what Ashely said about her realizing that itunes supports podcasts, I even realize that o my computer I have a specific program for just podcasting.

  10. Honestly, I do not listen to podcasts at all...I barely heard of them until this class. I think that podcasts are definitely going to decrease. I can understand why people are interested in them, they can keep up with current events, listen to interviews, listen to music, and really anything else anyone can think of, but you can do all these on the computer, the radio, and any other type of technology. I dont think that podcasts are going to completely disapear, but it will definitely lose their popularity, especially since you dont hear much about them. Im also sure something else better will come around in a few years to make podcasts the past. I think of podcasts like the 8-track...was kinda popular until something better came, and now they mean absolutely nothing.
