Marketing via New Media

Marketing has become easier for companies than ever before. New media, such as social networking sites, collect millions of users around the world. Most people in this generation use the internet religiously, which makes the task of getting information about a new product or company out there simple. People are interacting via the internet, using Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, blogs, podcasts, e-mail and more to share their opinions and read or listen to other people’s opinions. Marketing is still popular amongst newspapers and billboards, but more people are involved in the digital world. Marketing via new media has become more common because it gets the word out there at a lower cost, as well as letting consumers become engaged by voicing their opinion. When the consumers can share their knowledge and opinion on a product or company in a more convenient and efficient way, it will enable marketers to make changes to their marketing techniques and products to satisfy the consumer to ultimately make more money.

Do you think marketing via new media works? If so, why does it work? Are there better ways besides print media or digital media for marketers to advertise or gain public feedback? Are marketers invading the public by using new media as a source of advertising? Should more people use new media as a source of marketing? Will people continue to market via new media in the future?

  1. I think that it may have some impact on people depending on the ads that are shown and in which capacity they are shown. For example, an ad that pops up and you have to "X" off of it may become annoying to people (it does to me), but an ad that's off to the side may draw someones attention. It's off to the side so you can look at it when it's convenient to you but it's not right in your face. I think a lot of print ads just get thrown away from people unless someone has chosen to sign up to get print ads mailed to their home. I think it's important that people not get bombarded by advertisements. No one wants ads popping up all over their screen but it's a good idea to have them off to the side. Some people may just choose to have them not shown but I thin in certain instances it can be effective.

  2. I believe that marketing via new media is an easy way to catch peoples attention. Everyone nowadays has an email, facebook, and even a twitter; so having to figure out how to catch the public's attention has been skipped simply because of world modernization. Personally, I feel that the easiest and most convenient way of advertising is through the social media. I feel as if it’s probably the most inexpensive way of getting your point across in the most eye catching way.
Marketers, at times, invade peoples emails, facebook, twitter, with all the constant advertisement which eventually gets incredibly annoying. Sometimes you would just like to log in and check your email, or facebook notifications, and you can’t because of the pop ups or the flashy advertisements on the side bar.
Everyone pretty much uses new media to get their most catchy and brow raising ideas across to the public. Especially since the world is claiming to go green and use less paper products, the only way out is the internet. This new media technique will always be around and will probably get more dramatic as time passes.

  3. I believe marketing via new media must work. While I do not have any evidence that it does, I believe it must. New Media is everywhere and comes in all different modes. Even if you aren't on facebook I bet you go on the internet. There are ads all over the place. Sure they are annoying but it gets your attention. Ads in social media are almost like a bad commercial. You still know the jingle even if its annoying. Example would be the fielt o fish McDonald's commercial. It is an easy way to get your ads out there where people will see them. As long as new media exists companies will continue to use it for marketing. It's an easy way to connect with a large group of people with different interests from different backgrounds.

  4. It definitely works...if you make sure your marketing correctly. It works because the persons who are doing the marketing look at the bright, positive sides to their product/organization. Both print media and digital media cover all areas of marketing your product. There may be better ways to advertise, but that also changes with the time period and how we advance technologically. Marketers do what they have to do to get their product out there...I’m sure if we were in a marketers shoes we’d be doing the same thing. Marketers will have boundaries for advertising, that is they don’t already, and if they breach their boundary I’m sure there are some consequences. If you want to market off your business or school or organization, then yes the new media source of marketing is your answer. It allows for your information to be more out in the public. People will continue to market their product where ever they can, if the technology changes then marketing will advertise differently.

  5. Personally, I feel that new media is probably the most effective way to advertise. I think this is so because people are constantly spending their time on something to do with new media. I don't think there is a better way then new media because honestly not a lot of people read newspapers anymore, and even though commericals are annoying that is where people learn about new products. Advertisers aren't really "invading" your space because most of the time the ads are on the side of a website so there technically not in your way. And even though they may bother you they get your attention. If people want to get their product out there then yes, new media is the best way to advertise. There are so many options to advertising with new media from websites to t.v. you certainly can get someone's attention. I can't even imagine what the future holds for advertising with new media as more technology develops I think marketing will too.

  6. Marketing using new media is something that companies need to use. This era of technology is one that is unavoidable, and the generation today knows nothing without it. The best way to get your product out there is to promote it in a place that most people will see it. Today, the internet offers a wide range of places in which marketing can be used.. New media is one that is so great because it easily allows normal everyday people to see something that they like, with the ease of a click of their mouse. Most people spend some of their day dedicated to a computer screen or phone screen, so making sure your product is seen by these individuals becomes important. From services to products, it becomes very easy to market anything that you want. The use of new media to market products also creates a job market that is fairly fresh and new. Using a combination of print and digital media is the best way to get a product out there. You could even use these two forms of marketing to further market your product. For instance, you could focus on a certain location and use those two forms of media to create an event for a specific product. If one was to market a new type of liquor, you could use print or digital media to get the word out there that there will be a vodka tasting and party at a local bar or club in a certain area. Marketing via new media will only become more prominent in the future. The goal of marketers is to get their product out to as many people as possible. Using tools, such as twitter, facebook, and youtube will only further allow the most people to see what they have to offer.

  7. I think marketing through new media works. It is a perfect way to get a massive audience that you know is going to see your product or your brand. Although, I know I personally ignore most advertisements. It is like I don't even see them sometimes. I don't think everyone is that way but I know that there attempts at grabbing my attention usually fail. I don't really think that marketers are invading the public by advertising this way. Sure, it is annoying to have pop ups and advertisements all over every website, but at the same time, like I said, I ignore them anyway. There are creative ways for companies to market via new media that do grab my attention like funny clips that go viral or things like that, though. I think marketing will continue to go this way in the future.

  8. I do believe that marketing through new media works. Everyone is on the internet, so everyone will be exposed to the adverts. It is, in my opinion, the easiest way to expose a mass amount of people to a product. Adverts that appear on the side and tops of pages or play before videos can be annoying, but they can still influence people. I don't think that using new media as a marketing tool is invasive and should be used. I do believe people will be using new media for marketing in the future.

  9. Marketing via new media most definitely works. I go on YouTube fairly often and their advertising for new movies or television shows on the home page is always upfront and eye catching. Their advertising on individual videos is a bit annoying, but definitely noticeable. The information regarding the new movies is memorable and influential to me because they are like coming attractions. That is why it works. They stick that idea in your head and it won't leave. Right now, television is still getting the largest audience, though not nearly as much as it once had, and I am sure that television advertising space is very expensive. Marketers are definitely invading the public by using new media as a source of advertising. Like I said regarding YouTube, the advertisements on individual videos are annoying and more times than not accompany the most popular videos. At the low cost for advertising space with new media, people should most definitely use it as a source of marketing. They would be foolish not to as it is most cost effective. People will increasingly continue to market via new media in the future.

  10. I think advertising companies have had to become much more clever since the dawn of the internet age. Just look at some of the pop-up adds that slow sites like Myspace and DeviantArt to a grinding halt when you're trying to load the page! They try to make it so that you'll click on them by pitching a a question with an obvious answer (with 'prize money' for whoever gets it right) and they even have ads tailored specifically to individual internet users based on what kinds of things they type into Google, what they 'like' on Facebook and what sites they go to. The ads that say something like 'meet sexy single men/women in your area!' have pictures of the same girls/guys for every internet user, but the companies have somehow obtained your name and address and each of these ads will say 'meet local singles in ALBANY, SCHENECTADY, or wherever you are from.' On the internet, advertisers need to resort to these sneaky tactics because of the whole notion that the internet is 'free' and corporations can't stand the thought of not milking the latest frontier for any penny they can get. Even I sometimes fall for these fake ads that lure you in in order to get pageviews. No website can ever be fully clean. Even Facebook has its share of spam, chain letters and viruses. It just depends on how long the site has been around and how crafty advertising companies can be.

  11. Today, advertising for companies is made so easy with all of the new media options. Companies can really have an add no matter where a person looks. They don't have to rely on the print version at all anymore, even though I feel it is still a very useful form of advertisement. While new media provides so many outlets for the companies, it can be very annoying for the consumers. There are way too many pop up ads that come up while you are on the internet. Netflix is one I continuously have to close when searching on the internet or opening new windows. They are obviously getting there name out there, but at the inconvenience of the consumer. I think this new media will always be a very popular, if not the most popular, way for companies to advertise. It usually does not require a lot on their half and so many people are forced to see what they put out there. Advertisements are anywhere you look and that will always be the case. If there is a new form of media that can "sell" a companies product, they will find a way to use it as a form of advertisement. While I don't think this form of advertising is invasive to people, I just think it can be a little over the top and annoying.

  12. Marketing via New Media works, to a certain degree. I know that when I set out to buy something its usually through word-of-mouth or T.V. commercials. But a good way to find out about a good book perhaps, is using something like Twitter or Facebook. That isn't really company advertisement but its a website making me want to buy something.

Advertising on websites is annoying, however. I never look at Facebook or blog ads and set out to block them instead. So yes, I am constantly getting the name of a product spammed in my face but that doesn't make me want to buy it. I prefer consumer feedback. The ads are getting more deviously annoying and its a plague rather then a help for marketing.

Marketers are seriously invading personal space. The Facebook ads are downright creepy half the time. Seriously, I think I have "cats" as a like and every stupid ad is a cat thing. And it can create unease for the consumer, knowing their information is so easily open for any big company. New Media should be used for marketing as long as is done right. Companies with Pop-Ads and the like have only further boosted the sales of Macbooks, I think. No pop-up gets through my laptop's beastly ad-eating network.

As technology advances, Marketing through New Media will get bigger and bigger. Now that we have it, it won't ever go away.

  13. As we have become a world amassed in new technology and social media, it is only fitting that major companies take advantage of our media obsessions. One main reason they prey on our internet habits is because for them it is FREE MARKETING AND ADVERTISING! They can easily force their advertisements down our throats because we let them. I personally find it very annoying that whenever I log into Facebook, twitter, or just surf the web I am bombarded with advertisements. I mean how do they know what I like?! It’s creepy. Facebook has become a huge marketing/advertising hub because of its popularity. Every status post, or comment you put, it seems as if they are watching to gain that advertising edge. If you are on Facebook I am sure you noticed the little ads popping up on the side with all kinds of consumer goodies. Most of it things that they KNOW you might be interested in. Twitter has also become a huge breeding ground for marketing and advertising. For example if you tweet something like “I love Chicken!” Guarantee you will get a “retweet” or a reply from a company who wants to help with your love of chicken. As long as social media and new technology blossoms so will new media marketing. If anything this is only the beginning.
