Facebook vs. Twitter

Vs.

A few years ago, someone had came out with the new social networking called Myspace. That was the big thing to be a part of and everyone was on myspace, at the time. Then someone made up the social networking for college students only, called Facebook and eventually grew to be available to EVERYONE. You needed a college email college to create a facebook. And finally, now someone came out with the newest version of social networking, called twitter. I used to say to myself that I was never going to create a twitter, because it is the exact same thing as facebook, and I already have a facebook. Until last week, when I finally joined twitter.

There are many differences between facebook and twitter. Twitter is basically ONLY telling the world what you are doing at the specific time. Facebook is really an entirely different type of networking. What do you think the positives and negatives are about Twitter? What are the positives and negatives about Facebook? How do the two differenciate? And do you think that in the future someone will combine them both?

  1. I think the positives of Twitter outweigh the negatives. It's all about just posting what you're doing, or using it to see what others are doing, as well as following news, celebrities, etc. The good thing about it is that you can choose who to follow, who to not follow, who to block, or whether you want to set your page to private. It's limited in what you can do in that it's not a full blow interactive social media site like Facebook, but I think it's a really cool way to interact, and that it does what it's meant for really well.
On the other hand, Facebook is totally different. While you can still post statuses (what you're doing) and follow people (add them as friends), there is more you can do with it. You can add a lot more information about yourself. You can join groups and become a fan of things. You can post discussions, post photo albums, and post if you will be attending a certain event or not.
I wouldnt necessarily say that either has negatives, because each individual user can choose what he or she wants to use the site for. There are many options, and that's what is so great about social networking sites. Facebook and Twitter have similarities and differences, and there are great reasons to use (or not use, if you so choose) either site.
I don't really think someone will ever combine the two. Since there are already similarities between Twitter and Facebook and they share some aspects, I'm sure that they will stay separate services. That's not to say that someone won't come out with yet another social networking site that will top MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter in the future. Who knows...?

  2. Personally I like Facebook more than twitter, I have never really found the purpose of twitter and I don’t use it regularly like others do therefore I may have a very strong opinion on the medium. The negatives about twitter are probably that you can only post a text with 140 characters similar to a normal text message. Some of the positives are that it could potentially be an ideal site for quick news updates. I think the general layout of Facebook is more ‘user-friendly’ because it allows people to upload photos, wall-to-wall with their friends, and become fans of multiple pages. I prefer using Facebook over Myspace because I feel as though its overall appearance is much more professional than that of Myspace. I think that twitter is very similar to Facebook in the sense that people can have status updates, which someone can change at any given time.

  3. I personally don't like to use twitter for several reasons. I don't really want everyone to know what I'm doing every minute, plus it's a little creepy if everyone who follows me cares what I'm doing every minute. Twitter can be fun though if you are following celebrities, then you can find more information directly from the source.

I have had a Facebook for almost 3 years now and I love it. There are certain things about it that can be negative. For example, if you put up a status about someone, then chances are you're going to hurt someones feelings. Also, if you put up pictures of yourself drinking underage, then you're just not thinking correctly. If you do this and your future boss see's it, you might not get a job because of it. I think Facebook is easier to find people, and easier to share other things and I think more people use Facebook because they can share so much on it.

  4. I personally do not like Twitter. I had made a Twitter account about a year ago because I thought it was going to be the next big thing. It was not as great as it was cracked up to be. On Twitter you share a few words. A text length message. A text is meant for your friends not for everyone. You a get a picture and statuses on Twitter.

Facebook on the other hand you get to have a profile. I feel like Facebook is personal it describes me. Its more than just words, I can have many pictures and a profile. I can search for anyone very easily and find who Im looking for. I know on Twitter they have privacy settings but they basically just cover your tweets. Facebook I can block just about anything from certain people and even a whole group of people. I feel like having this kind of site should represent me and not just some words about me.

And yes on both you can have your friends. i feel that most of my friends do not have a Twitter for a reason. Twitter reminds me of something like a stalker page. Its like ok wanna know where I am check my Twitter.

  5. For the longest time I did not want anything to do with Facebook. I had a Myspace and was completely happy with that. Until my friends made a FB for me. Facebook was so much easier, safer and fun to work with. So I dumped Myspace and started my friendly relationship with Facebook.

For the longest time I did not want anything to do with Twitter. Until I joined this class and now I have one. As I previously blogged about, there are many useful qualities to having a twitter. It is not at all like Facebook and I already have learned a lot about Tweeting, hashtags and more.

The difference between Twitter and Facebook is that one is used more intimately than the other. For me at least, I use Facebook to keep up with friends and family. Twitter is more to keep up with anyone and everyone who cares. Also, if you are into "celebrity gossip", then twitter is perfect for you. There are negatives and positives to having both. Of course there is the privacy issue. If you are sharing your life via the internet, there is always going to be that issue. Both sites have figured out ways to protect their users but still, be cautious in what you are willing to share. Also, you cannot believe everything you hear or see online. That is why Twitter and FB are not ideal for finding out the latest news.

All in all I enjoy both sites and can't wait to see what is next for the virtual world.

  6. I don't use Twitter, or really understand it that much. The concept behind it seemed really interesting to me, but I guess it doesn't actually seem to have a very practical purpose to me. The idea behind it being that you can communicate with people who you normally couldn't, seems very similar to Facebook. I feel as if Facebook let's your see status updates, but you can also post pictures, and have a personal conversation with people on Facebook. The advantage I see to Twitter, is that you can follow whoever you like, including celebrities. However, you could always be a fan of a celebrity on Facebook, and be able to see postings on that site as well.

  7. The positives of facebook, is you can reconnect with your friends, and talk to them on a regular basis, when you would normally not talk to them in months. One of the main negatives of facebook is their constant change of privacy settings, and how they follow your cookies to put spam on the side of your profile, which is a great place for a hacker to mess up your computer. The positives for twitter is people can begin to know your intimate details of your life...im not sure this is positive. I am not a fan of twitter at all really...they are different because twitter seems to be useless, unless someone is really passionate about the person they are following. I cannot think of a way to combine both facebook and twitter, twitter seems to just take the updates of a person and make a whole social network on it. I am sure, however, that something else will come in the future that will make both these social network sites obsolete, like myspace.

  8. I prefer facebook over twitter. I don't see the appeal of twitter. Twitter is basically a journal. Facebook is a social networking site. It was made for people to connect. I don't like twitter because presonally I don't care what my friends are doing every 3 minutes. I also don't think I would want to post little things everyday. I like facebook because you can see your friends pages and look at their pictures and leave them messages.

  9. The biggest difference I've seen between twitter and facebook is the immediacy of twitter. People often post a number of times during the day and those posts can directly be delivered to most electronic devices. In contrast, people ccan immediately post on a feed, but people either have to be online or regularly check the facebook feed via their phone to get the information right away. This difference, in my opinion, is the main reason twitter can differentiate itself.

I think in a lot of ways twitter and facebook are beginning to combine, you can access many people's twitter pages from their facebook page. They feed off of each other very well. Facebook is a hir more complex with games, more extensive blogs and a lot of other apps, but for the most part, I think the two have already begun to interact in a convenient way.

  10. I do not have a Twitter account. I don't know much about Twitter. I've seen things through the media like celebrities updating their statuses but on my Facebook I don't even update mine every day. I think the negatives about Twitter is that it takes away from a person's privacy. I personally would not want everyone knowing what I am doing.

I have had a Facebook account since my freshman year of college and I love it. I think it's useful for companies that they can have pages now. I think Facebook is another outlet for companies and businesses to draw attention which is beneficial to them. For example, Price Chopper now has a fan page and people can find coupons on there. This draws business to them and is helpful for those who shop there. This can also be useful for celebrities who may want to promote a tour or their new album. It also allows people to reconnect if they have not seen them in a while. However, there are negatives to Facebook, too. I think some spend way too much time on Facebook. Also, people are using technology more now to communicate rather than communicating over the phone or in person.

  11. I do not have a twitter, and sometimes I wish I did not have a facebook. This usually happens when I have an essay due, yet I feel the compulsive need to check on what people are doing. It's not even that I really want to know, I just want, in a self defeating way, the distraction. Personally, I see twitter as another distraction. Truthfully, I know that if I ever got a twitter I would be as addicted to that as I am to facebook.

I don't really care for the format of twitter, so this makes it easier for me to avoid it. I prefer the way facebook lets you see someone's status updates and their information such as school, jobs, and interests. I usually find this information more interesting than status updates, so I don't think I would really like solely using twitter.

I think that facebook perceives twitter as a threat. For this reason they changed the layout of facebook to resemble twitter. I think that this was a mistake, and that facebook should focus on what made it good in the first place instead of emulating twitter.
