Nominees: Most Effective Users of Social Media
Who is your nominee for most effective user of social media? Who wields the blogosphere -- or Facebook -- or Twitter -- with the greatest effectiveness? How does this person/organization reach a wide audience and energize their followers? How are they able to create a "brand" identity? How would you describe that identity? How are they able to increase their audience and effectively engage a wide range of people? What makes them a success? How broad is that success -- and what can we learn from them?

I nominate Barrack Obama. President Obama realizes that many people use facebook and twitter. That these two social networking sites are what keep people connected, and how they tend to get their news and learn about current events. Because of this Obama have both a facebook account and a twitter account. Whether he actually is updating them, or most likely someone he has put in charge of these two accounts he is still getting information out to the public in a way that the public likes best. Speeches, bills, and other ways to get information out is great and wonderful, but much of this generation would rather have a message 140 characters or less telling them what is happening now. By recognizing this more people in America is staying connected with their president and their own country. Unlike President Bush, who completely ignored the fact that most people are getting updated from these two sources, Obama is educating the people, and getting them to care a little more about what is happening around them. So I nominate our president as the one who most effectively uses social and new media. He is doing more than just saying what is happening day to day, instead he has 3,771,959 followers who now know what the country and the world is doing on a constant basis. He is actually reaching out to people and educating them.

I think that the most effect user of social media is Perez Hilton. Perez Hilton has been blogging since 2005; sharing celebrity gossip and photos with a lot of snark. There is nothing neutral or journalistic about Hilton's approach to blogging, it is his opinions on the lives of celebrities.
ReplyDeleteHilton has quite literally made a name for himself through blogging. Born Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr., he adopted the name "Perez Hilton" as a blogging persona and also as a link to Paris Hilton, a celebrity who frequently appears in his posts. Hilton's blog originally appeared as pagesixsixsix.com, but it is now perezhilton.com. Hilton has made such a name for himself that he is actually the main attraction to his site now, instead of the celebrities he covers. Having the website moniker devoted solely to Hilton shows that he has created his own brand.
Hilton's brand, himself, is quite successful. In addition to his blog he makes frequent TV appearances and tweets regularly. Hilton is such an effective user of new media, that he has become a celebrity in his own right.
The person who I nominate as being the most effective blogger is Kevin Muldoon. I found him while searching on the internet for some great bloggers. He manages his own blog site, as well as contributes to a site called BloggingTips. I noticed right away by viewing a few posts that this site is geared to giving advice on blogging and social media. You can see some examples of people’s Twitter pages, as well as a blog about starting a business online. It gives a lot of different types of information about using the internet effectively.
ReplyDeleteIf you do a quick Google search for Kevin Muldoon, you can find out even more information about him. He has a Twitter account, as well as another site called blogthemesclub, where blog designs are created and sold. He contributes to several websites with his tips about blogging, and he also utilizes several of these types of sites he talks about. This is why I think he is is an effective user of social media. He is involved in many things on the internet, which makes him well known. His “about me” sections on the various websites and Google searches can provide a lot of information about what he does, and this helps to create his identity. He may not have worldwide success and fame, but I think he is successful with what he is trying to accomplish, which is to help garner effective use of blogging and social media.
I nominate Cory Doctorow. I believe we read an essay he provides free online earlier this semester. When we read that essay, i got to thinking, where have I heard that name before? It turns out, he is hugely famous in the internet world and outside of it. His multi-faceted skills give him a leg up on the competition, since he contributes to older (newspapers and magazines) as well as newer (blogs, websites etc) forms of media. He is an author, which makes his approach to freely distributing information unorthodox and new. He's an activist for technology and the rights of its creators as well as a man who publishes in print, in the real world. His progressive use of new media and his acceptance of those who have yet to enter the world of new media give him an edge, and I think make him widely accessible and successful with the outside "real" world.
ReplyDeleteHis blogging style,a sample of which can be viewed here, http://www.boingboing.net/2010/04/26/in-praise-of-sfwas-g.html#more , is serious in its content, but comedic in its presentation, which makes him an enjoyable read. I think his success can be well represented by the simple fact, that a blogger is described in Wikkipedia. What better representation of success is there? Most people have never heard of him outside of discussions of technology and blogging, yet there he is, with his own little space on Wikkipedia. That's an accomplishment in and of itself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_Doctorow that's the URL for his little Wikkipedia haven. Overall, I chose to nominate Cory Doctorow because he raised a good portion of his reputation up through the various forms of New Media, as well as contributing to the older ones. He represents the blogger of today and I think he deserves to be the most effective user of new media.
Although this isn't necessarily the case anymore, I'd say Paris Hilton was really effective at using social media. She has a blog, twitter, and a facebook fanpage. She also used youtube to increase her fame. To be honest, I knew Paris Hilton was really famous for something, but I wasn't even sure what she did with her life that made everyone want to "follow" her life. She had a TV show, to get her face out into the world, several movies, and she released a CD, and also wrote a book. I don't think she did any of those things exceptionally, but the point is, that she did them. She used as many channels as possible to get her name and face well known throughout America.
ReplyDeleteHer blog (www.parishiltonzone.com) is colorful, with recent news about Paris, and what she's been up to recently. Some of the links on the side are for her music, movies, and pictures. For quite some time, she was featured in several magazines for trivial things. If you can get a magazine spread, and TV time because you lost your dog, then you're probably doing something right in the Social Media. I'm not sure why people cared so much when she went to jail, but the point is, that they did. I don't think she has a very good singing voice, but people still purchase her music. I don't personally think she's a phenomenal actress, but directors look to put her in movies, because they'll get more people interested in watching them. She may not be above and beyond in the things that she does, but she makes people care, and that's what makes her effective at using social media.
My nominee for the most effective use of social media would be Facebook. I believe that Facebook is one of the easiest ways of connecting and staying in touch with people (besides simply the telephone). Now, people can keep in contact over the social networking site by uploading pictures, writing on each others walls, and becoming fans of certain pages. I feel as though many classes, businesses, etc. are becoming more involved with the use of Facebook. Many businesses may create a Facebook page to promote the business, or simply to just get their name out there. Many classes are creating groups on Facebook in order for all the students to always remain connected. I feel as though a continual updating of the Facebook page by all group members allows for the group page to always be up and running with new ideas. By creating a Facebook group they are able to remain connected at all times to their followers. The group creator may compose a mass email that will send out to all of the following group members. There are also discussion board posts that allow for the interactive-ness within the group itself. The amount of success a page receives depends on the topic of discussion and how many people appear to like the topic. A successful group will be one that many people favor, and follow and there will be constant interaction because members will have their own opinions on certain discussions.
ReplyDeleteI nominate John Legend; I think he is very effective with social media. He has Twitter, Facebook, and a Website. He promotes himself in a very classy way and is always trying to help others. He not only uses his music as a source of living but through his social media we see how he uses the benefits to help people through his "Show Me Campaign." He uses Facebook and Twitter to tell of upcoming songs, display videos from concerts, and get people to interact with him. He updates his Facebook and Twitter almost everyday with new information. He posts links and responds to his fans constantly. His website has apparel you can buy, tickets for sale, and donations you can make for his charity. He even energizes his fans by having promotions such as meeting him in person and spending the day with him. He promotes his shows before they are going to happen and tweets or posts on Facebook about hw he appreciates his fans, thanking them for their support. He publicizes himself a lot on television and then promotes it on Facebook and Twitter with links. His music is very versatile so it not only appeals to one group of people; he realizes this so he uses different forms of media to publicize himself, his music, and campaign. Because of this he has 348, 928 people that are his fans on Facebook and 1,820,829 followers on Twitter.
ReplyDeleteI would nominate Mark Zuckerberg who designed Facebook for the greatest effectiveness. It is not hard to say that virtually everyone uses Facebook; even older people are starting to use it more now. I think one of the many reasons people use this is because it is an easy way to stay in touch with all of your friends from high school and college. I know Facebook is widely linked on almost every site that has a journal entry or some picture so that someone can re-post this on Facebook. For example, if you find an article in the newspaper that you really liked, then you can post a link to it on your page. It makes it that simple for others on your friends list to see what you are reading and re-read it or find something else. Facebook's logo is definitely an eye grabber. All you have to do is see that little blue box with the "f" in it, and everyone knows what it is. Facebook is widely used throughout the world to connect people together. I believe what makes Facebook such a success is how it is so simple to use, and how easy it is to reconnect with old friends. This is one of the reasons I think older people are starting to use it now is because they want to reconnect with people they went to school with. Facebook's success is incredible. I'm sure when Mark Zuckerberg, the designer of Facebook first came up with the idea, he may not have known how much of a success it would be. He knows how to link everything to any site. This is what makes his site such a success.
ReplyDeleteWhen thinking about someone who effectively uses social media, I automatically look to those famous individuals who use the media in order to thank fans, update their status (literally and figuratively) and just say hi. Someone who does this quite often is John Mayer. I know what some of you are thinking, how terribly annoying some of his tweets can be. Who cares about what he ate for breakfast or what party he recently attended? According to Twitter, 3,238,724 fans and counting do and that is pretty impressive for just one twitter page.
ReplyDeleteHe may not utilize other media such as Facebook but with all the publicity he gets off Twitter, he really does not have to. He is able to do all that he needs to do just from tweeting, hashtagging and retweeting what ever he desires. This is a great way to keep in touch with his fan-base, making them feel personally thanked when he tweets to his fans. It may not mean much to the average person but to a dedicated fan this shows a lot. Also, his tweets keep the fans updated with his latest shows, tours and events. This is a really effective way to use the media because in the end he is selling more tickets.
John Mayer also has a blog. This blog is on his main web page Johnmayer.com which can be found on his Twitter. The blog may be a fairly new addition to his social media life but it has already taken a big effect on his followers. He was able to use his blog to thank all his fans for coming out and supporting him. Also promoting the continuum of his tour over the summer. He blogged about his dear friend/photographer Jim Marshall passing away and how much he appreciated him. Helping fans understand that he too is a normal person who has to endure such tragedies as a death of a close friend.
John Mayer, uses the media as much as he can. He has a Twitter,Blog and his own website. Using all of his media effectively and keeping the fans as close as he possibly can.
The person that I nominated for the most effective use of social Media would be Kendra Bucket. We all know who she is from the television show, the Girls Next Door. She started out by starring on this show when she was 18 years old. She was on this show for only a few years, until she was able to get her own television show with her husband and new baby boy. When Kendra got married, and had her baby, she was all over the cover news papers and magazines. Kendra also uses a social media called Twitter. It was a verified site so I knew that she was actually "tweeting" herself (http://twitter.com/KendraWilkinson). Recently, she has been tweeting about her new episodes that play every monday night on her television show. And I just now found out that she is making a DVD workout video on how to loose and tone yourself. Being that she just had a baby, Kendra wanted to get back into shape, and what is a better way to do this than through having her own workout DVD. It is available to the public this coming summer.
ReplyDeleteKendra Wilkinson/Bucket is my nomination for a person who uses media effectively. She has two television shows, been on the cover of multiple magazines/newspapers, she follows twitter, and is making a workout DVD. She apparently uses the media as much as she can to reach her fans.
I chose P!nk because she has a verified Twitter, Facebook fan page, Myspace, Youtube, and her own website.
ReplyDeleteP!nk is a well known vocal artist with 5 hit albums. She is know as the bad ass with her hair dyed hot pink. She has many tattoos and just does not care what people think about her. She is married to motocross star Carey Hart.
P!nk's Twitter is no different then any persons twitter ( P!nk's Twitter ). Here Twitter is a verified Twitter meaning it actually her tweeting. Her tweets are usually simple little things from her day. She tags many of her friends in her tweets. Its like a person gets to see a little snapshot of her life without actually being there. A fan can know every song she has by heart but never know whats shes really like.
P!nk also has a Myspace Music page ( Pinks Myspace). Now this page is different than a Twitter page. This site is very much about her music. Its all about listening to the songs and where a person can purchase the albums. Not much about her but this site helps raise her celebrity, because without her music no one would know who P!nk is.
P!nk also has a Youtube page (Pinks Music Video's on Youtube ). This is a place where you can see all of P!nk's videos. You can listen to all of her music for free.
P!nk also has a webpage that is pretty well kept up with up to date facts about her ( P!nk's "Like" Page ).It is pretty well desgined around her. Im pretty sure she has no connection to it though. I could not find an actual "P!nk" friend page. This is something common with celebrities having a fan page.
Through these few Social media sites I feel that P!nk is successfully conveying herself. And is enhancing her musical career because shes getting people involved with her and not just on a musical basis. I think her having a personal twitter is the one thing that really sets her apart. She engages people from all social media networks , she does not just have one site. By having many sites she can engage more people to follow her. Her success is pretty well known. Her facebook page has 1,369,438 fans or "likes". On twitter she has 1,289,98 followers. These sites are really helping her get more free publicity also.
I'm nominating Kim Kardashian. Although she isn't famous for singing or acting, she definitely has used social media to get ahead in her career. Kim has a verified twitter account, facebook page, youtube page, and website. She updates her pages daily and has a lot of followers. She has 1,160,791 fans on facebook and 3,474,308 followers on twitter. Her twitter account is updated frequently and tags a lot of her friends in her updates and posts pictures as well. She is constantly updating her fans on what she us up to. She also updates her website (http://kimkardashian.celebuzz.com/) often. She posts pictures of her family and friends. She also promotes her fashion lines and modeling career. She even has her own television show.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say for someone who became famous for nothing she definitely has come far. Social media has kept her relevant and successful over the past few years.
I would nominate Facebook for most effective use of social media. Facebook, when it was first introduced, was just a social networking site for college students. Now, it is used by high school students, companies, and adults. The number of people on Facebook has increased drastically over the years. Facebook is definitely more popular and effective than Twitter. This social networking site is reached to a wide audience by the media drawing attention to the site. Many companies and stores have links on their pages to make their store or company a fan page of Facebook users. For example, Express's website has a link to "become a fan of Express on Facebook". News channels have even discussed the Facebook phenomenon. Earlier in the semester, our class discussed how Facebook is to blame for ending relationships. Some of us do not believe that theory but others do. YouTube, another popular website, has links to Facebook. This is going to draw more visitors to Facebook, as well. I have my YouTube account linked to my Facebook so that the videos I favorite on YouTube show up on my Facebook page.
ReplyDeleteFacebook creates a brand identity by both the font and colors used for the Facebook logo. This identity is portrayed by the blue background and white font, all encompassed in a rectangle. As mentioned before, the media is effective in increasing audience. Companies all over the world are on Facebook. Facebook also gets a lot of press through the news. It is also a huge topic in classrooms, like ours. The users are what make Facebook a success. All the celebrities, companies, stores, restaurants, and people on Facebook help in the success of this social networking website. This success is very broad, throughout the world there are people logging on to Facebook on a daily basis. We can learn that once something is adopted by celebrities or companies, it can become a huge trend. The more press and media there is, the popularity will most likely grow, just like Facebook has.
